Beaumont officer shoots man pointing rifle

BEAUMONT — A man who riased a rifle toward a Beaumont police officer was shot in the chest by the officer, who feared for his safety and the safety of others in the vicinity.

Officers responded to the 3100 block of East Lucas at Galveston to a reported aggravated assault at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. A woman had called 9-1-1 and said a man had just shot at her.

The woman told officers on the scene that a man had fired a shot at her as she was in front of a residence in the 3100 block of East Lucas.  The shot was fired from a house in the 4800 block of Galveston.  The woman was not injured, according to a press release from the Beaumont Police Department.

Officers attempted to make contact with the man at which point he exited the house on Galveston with a rifle.  Officers ordered the man to drop the rifle.  The man refused to comply and instead, raised the rifle toward an officer.  The officer was forced to use his weapon to fire at the man, the press release said.

The shot struck the man in the chest and he immediately fell to the ground.  The officers approached the man, secured his weapon, and began to administer first aid as they called for EMS.

Beaumont EMS responded and transported the man to Christus St. Elizabeth ER.  Hospital personnel listed the man in critical condition before they took him into surgery. Officers at the scene were not injured.

Officers on scene did not suffer physical injury during the incident.

Officers called for Investigators from the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office to assist with the investigation.
