Disabled American Veterans chapter receives charter

VIDOR — A new organization assisting disabled veterans is now open and serving Orange County.

The Orange County Disabled American Veterans Chapter, located in Vidor, received its official charter to become a certified chapter and serve veterans within the county on Monday evening and made the announcement on Tuesday. The group will hold a “meet, eat and greet” at 7 p.m., Monday, July 29, at First Pentecostal Church, located at 185 Camp St. on the corner of Wilson Street in Vidor.

“We are excited about this new chapter because we think it will really be a big help to many of the veterans in the county,” said Bruce Lockett, a founding member of the organization. “It’s our desire to work with all other veterans organizations to help better serve our veterans.”

The Disabled American Veterans chapter, currently known as the “Tiger and Lyons” chapter, has approximately 60 members already and is looking for more to join.

“Any disabled veteran in Orange County, or the surrounding area, in need of assistance, can contact us for help,” Lockett added. “Even if they are 0 percent disabled, they are able to join. We just want to bring veterans together and do our best to make sure they can get the care and take advantage of the resources they need.”

Lockett cited examples such as medical care, medical equipment, assistance or revisions at home and more.

Lockett said the chapter’s leadership will be in attendance, including President Gary Warren and many of the other officers.

The organization is open to membership to veterans of “all branches” of the United States Armed Forces and “all wars and conflicts,” according to Lockett.

“If you are a veteran and you do not have a compensable rating from the Department of Veteran Affairs, then the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) will be glad to help you with that too,” Lockett explained. “This chapter will help us provide a voice for Disabled American Veterans from branches and periods of war.”
