Fine arts summer camps at Lamar

BEAUMONT —  Lamar University’s College of Fine Arts and Communication will hold a number of camps specializing in the arts on campus this summer. Camps are offered for a variety of ages, with both daily and residential opportunities.

String musicians entering 7th-12th grades are invited to an intensive String Camp (June 9-12) with professional musicians from the Symphony of Southeast Texas (SOST) and Lamar University’s Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music. Full-string orchestra rehearsals will be led by Chelsea Tipton, II, SOST music director. String Camp rehearsals and sectionals will take place in the Simmons Music Building at Lamar. The camp fee is $150 for registration before May 16. The registration fee from May 17 through June 1 is $175. Register online at sost.org/stringcamp. Hosted by the Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music, Band Camp I (June 15-19) is for students entering 7th and 8th grades. Band Camp II/Percussion Camp (June 22-26) covers students entering 9th-12th grade. Students may choose either residential or day camp. For either camp, cost is $375 (early registration by June 3) or $395 (after June 3) for the full resident tuition (includes tuition, room, meals and recreation), and $275 (by June 3)/$295 (after June 3) for commuter tuition (includes tuition and recreation). Drum Camp (July 7-10) is open to middle and high school students. Expanding on Band Camp II/Percussion Camp, participants at Drum Camp will learn all aspects of marching percussion to prepare them for school marching band. They will also be introduced to Brazilian percussion. Camp fee is $90 per person. The fee goes up to $100 per person the first day of camp. The Department of Theatre & Dance will offer a Theatre/Film Camp (July 14-15). The camp presents “Filmmaking 101” to students age 13+. All campers will participate in one capacity or another in the production of a short film, including acting, directing, cinematography, lighting, costume or crew. The camp will operate at various locations throughout the campus, but will be mainly based in the University Theatre. The cost is $250 per participant. Lunch will be provided both days. Dependents of Lamar’s faculty and staff receive a discount price of $200 per person. Campers will receive a copy of the short film they all produce at the end of the camp as well as a camp T-shirt. At the Summer Dance Intensive (July 14-18), students study ballet, modern, jazz, contemporary and hip-hop dance with our stellar lineup of professional dancers. Dancers choose to attend full or half days, with a residential option available. For participants who pre-pay and register for the intensive by July 15, the cost for the full-day intensive is $200 per person. Half-day prices are $125 per person. Lamar students, faculty and staff and their dependents receive a discount price for the full-day intensive of $125 per person. This camp is hosted by the Department of Theatre & Dance. The Department of Art will host a Pre-College Summer Art Program (July 21-25) for high school students (ages 14-18). Taught by Department of Art faculty, this five-day intensive program includes a selection of workshops, including drawing, painting, digital photography, sculpture, graphic design and art history. The art history workshops focus on museum curatorial work and a look at art and crime. The camp culminates in an exhibition and reception. Tuition is $200 for the week and includes all supplies and four lunches, Monday through Thursday, in the Brooks-Shivers Dining Hall, as well as an exhibition reception on Friday. Lamar University’s All-State Choir Camp (July 21-24) introduces students to the repertoire for the All-Region and All-State Choir auditions. The four days of intensive instruction feature sectional and full rehearsals, sight-reading classes, composers forum, conductors forum, auditioning tips, diction classes, optional private voice lessons, talent show, recreational activities and vocal health. Students may choose either residential or day camp. Cost is $295 (for four days of instruction, meals and accommodation). Tuition for TMEA 2014 All-State Choir members is $165. Students may also choose a commuter option of $150. Camp t-shirts are included in the price of all tuitions.
