Primary run-off election begins Monday, new location in Orange

ORANGE — Early voting for the May 27 run-off election begins Monday.

Early voting for the Primary run-off elections will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, May 19 through Friday, May 23, at the four early voting locations in Orange County. Election day is Tuesday, May 27.

Although the process is the same, one of the early voting locations has changed. Voters wishing to submit ballots early in Orange must now do so in the Wilson Building at Lamar State College-Orange at 506 Green Ave. on the corner of Fourth Street. The Orange Public Library will not be used for early voting during this election.

The other early voting locations remain the same. Those locations are the Bridge City Public Works Building, 220 Nitsche in Bridge City, the Raymond Gould Community Center, 385 Claiborne in Vidor, and First Baptist Church, 11540 State Highway 12 in Mauriceville.

In Orange County, the Republican Party ballot has the most races of local interest.

The run-off election between candidates John Dubose and Brint Carlton will decide the next Orange County Judge. For resident of Precinct 2 in Orange County, a run-off race between Barry Burton and Ron Cowling will decide the next Orange County Commissioner in that Precinct.

Another notable race which will directly relate to Orange County residents on the ballot includes the run-off for the party nomination for U.S. Representative of District 36 between Ben Streusand and Dr. Brian Babin.

Also on the ballot are nomination run-off races for Lieutenant Governor between Dan Patrick and David Dewhurst, Attorney General between Dan Branch and Ken Paxton, Commissioner of Agriculture between Sid Miller and Tommy Merritt, and Railroad Commissioner between Wayne Christian and Ryan Sitton.

Locally, the Democratic ballot does not have any races between Orange County candidates.

Two run-off races on the Democratic ballot include the party nomination for U.S. Senator between David M. Alameel and Kesha Rogers, and the Commissioner of Agriculture between Richard “Kinky” Friedman and Jim Hogan.

There may be some confusion who can and who cannot vote in the Primary run-off election this week, according to Tina Barrow, Orange County Election Administrator.

“Anyone who is a registered voter can vote in the run-off election,” Barrow said. “But, if you voted in the March Primary election, then you have to stay in the party you voted in. So, if you voted Democrat in March, then you have to vote Democrat in the run-off too. If you did not vote at all in March, but you want to vote in the run-off, then you can vote however you want.”

Anyone with questions may call the Orange County Election Administration at 409-882-7973 for information.
