Welcome Baby New Year

ORANGE — The first babe of the New Year from Orange County was born Tuesday at Baptist Hospital Orange.

Brandon Martin Jr., the son of Brandon and Britni Martin of Bridge City, arrived at 9:16 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 3, to become the first child born in Orange County in 2012. The newborn weighed 7 pounds, 1.4 ounces and measured 19 inches long.

Britni Martin’s original due date for young Brandon was supposed to be Jan. 9, but it was discovered that he was in a breech position so a Cesarean section (C-section) was set for Tuesday morning.

“His head was up high, so it was kind of painful,” Martin said pointing at the bottom of her sternum. “They said he was breech, so they just scheduled me to come in.

“We knew he was supposed to be the first baby born in the new year, unless someone went into labor before then,” she added.

Martin, 19, was not sure what to expect during a C-section surgery.

“I could feel everything they were doing (during the surgery), but I couldn’t see anything,” she added as she started laughing. “I had to ask them why he wasn’t crying yet, and they said it was because they had only pulled out his foot and his leg.

“When he got here, he started crying and I started crying,” Martin said with a big smile. “I would do it all again. It was worth it.”

Martin knows she has plenty of help available, if and when needed, from her mother and mother-in-law, but is excited about the experience of being a mother for the first time.

“It’s definitely all new to me, but I’m looking forward to it,” she said.
