Improvised Explosive Devices class already scheduled for first responders

ORANGE — Orange County Emergency Management already had plans in place for a class for Improvised Explosive Devices scheduled for Wednesday but with the events in Boston, the class becomes more important.

Director of Emergency Management Jeff Kelley told Commissioners Court Monday afternoon that the class was filled.

“It will be a day long class,” Kelley said. “There may be some booms heard in the air, but there is no reason for concern.”

Kelley said there will be a live fire demonstration and will be closed to the public.

The class is for first responders.

The Public Health Emergency Coordinator from Hardin County has been hired.

The county received the deposit from the State Comptroller of Public Accounts for February 2013. The amount was $337,442.64 and shows that the amount generated through sales tax is still going up.

Commissioner pct. 1 David Dubose said to buy Orange.

The court accepted contracts with Orangefield Water Supply Corporation and Mauriceville Municipal Utility District for water and sewer service at the Orange County Convention and Expo Center.

“These are provider contracts,” County Judge Carl Thibodeaux said. “Just like for one’s home.”

The transportation department was given the go-ahead to fill a part time dispatcher position. The position was opened when the person was promoted to full-time.

“I am glad to see you promoting from within the department,” Thibodeaux said.

The court approved the paying of county bills for a total of $187,102.01.

The court approved a resolution requesting the continuation of the Obstetrics unit at Baptist Hospital Orange. The hospital recently announced the closing of the unit to be effective May 1, 2013.

The court proclaims April as Sexual Assault and Awareness and Prevention Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month. The week of April 21-27, 2013 is proclaimed as National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.
