BC council to tweak door-to-door vendor ordinance

BRIDGE CITY — City officials are considering a new ordinance which will put restrictions on door-to-door sales.

City councilmembers met this week to discuss the parameters of an ordinance which would place regulations on itinerant vendors. This ordinance is meant to target the majority of door-to-door salespersons and solicitors who do not reside in the community.

“We really haven’t allowed this sort of thing since Hurricane Ike,” said Jerry Jones, city manager. “We cannot legally keep them from selling stuff and going door-to-door, but we can regulate the times and require them to have permits in order to do it.”

Although Jones stated no problems have arisen in recent weeks, some residents have called about representatives of an alarm-security company going door-to-door at late hours.

More information is being gathered before the next council meeting, and council is expected to approve the new ordinance at that time.

“Council wanted some direction and the city attorney is researching some of that information from other similar ordinances in the surrounding area,” Jones added. “The permit fee is $100 per person, so if the company has four people going door-to-door, then they will need four permits.”

According to Mayor Kirk Roccaforte, the city created the initial ordinance following Hurricane Ike because out-of-town contractors were going door-to-door and no one knew how reputable they were or if they even were contractors.

“It’s not just about getting permit fees, it’s about safety too,” Roccaforte explained. “We don’t need someone going door-to-door when its almost dark or random people following someone into their house.

“This ordinance will require each person representing that company or organization to have a permit, which a citizen can request to see and verify if they have any concerns,” he added.”

Jones said council will potentially approve the new ordinance at its next meeting on June 13 as the finalize hours, permit fees and fines at that time.
