Lexington Bridge repairs move forward

PINEHURST — City Council for the City of Pinehurst had to make a tough decision.

The council met for a Special Session on Monday concerning the replacement of the Lexington Street Bridge and the rehabilitation of the Sewer lift stations.

Initially, the city planned toward the bids for the projects but the ones received were higher than what was originally budgeted for each project.

To add to the dilemma, the Broad Street lift station went down last Wednesday according to City Administer Joe Parkhurst.

“We had an electrician come out and the wiring is gone,” Parkhurst said.

The city opted to work replace the Lexington Street Bridge now while waiting for additional grant funds for the lift stations.

“The request for additional funds has been made,” Grant Administrator David Waxman said. “We have a reasonable expectation of the additional funds will come to pass.”

Waxman said he could not guarantee the timing if the funds but agreed the city needed to move ahead with at least one project.

Parkhurst said the city already received permission from the hospital to allow access to Foskey Veterinary Clinic, 14 Lexington Drive, from the hospital’s parking lot.

Councilman Dan Barclay asked the council to consider controlling the heavy equipment through that access.

“We do not want to tear up someone else’s property,” Barclay said. “We don’t want another tab we weren’t expecting.”

Parkhurst said the city’s equipment could access it from elsewhere to minimize the impact while the bridge is under construction.
