Salvation Army seeking coat donations for community giveaway

PINEHURST — A local organization is asking for help from the public to keep children warm this winter.

The Salvation Army of Orange County is holding a special event, “Coats for Kids,” from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Friday, Nov. 8 at its Salvation Army offices at 1950 Martin Luther King Drive in Pinehurst at the corner of Strickland.

According to Capt. Michael Cox of The Salvation Army, the purpose of the program is to help bridge the game between the holiday giving time and the time of year when it is important to keep children warm during the cold weather months.

“Every year it seems like more people ask us for coats, especially for their children,” Cox said. “We need to try to answer those requests, and this event is our response.”

The Salvation Army is accepting coat donations for children between the ages of infant to 12-years-old. Coats must be in good to like-new condition and all donations can be made without having to leave the comfort of your automobile by just pulling into the parking lot.

“The community most definitely helps us whenever we put out a request for assistance,” Cox continued. “Every time we put something out, the community steps up and delivers. That is part of what makes serving this community so exciting.”

Typically, in Southeast Texas, winter’s impact is not as frigid as northern climates might be, but, for Cox, it is better to be safe than sorry.

“We keep hearing that it could be a colder than normal winter,” he added. “So, just in case, we want to make sure these kids can stay warm.”

The coat giveaway will be held from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 11. Parents of children in the community who need such coats may contact The Salvation Army by registering at the office.
