Inmate dies following medical emergency

ORANGE — An inmate at the Orange County Correctional Facility has died following a medical emergency.

Joda Lewis Atchley of Orange died at approximately 5 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, after being transported to three hospitals. He died at Methodist Hospital in Houston from a “ruptured aneurysm on his brain,” according to medical personnel at the hospital as stated in a press release from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

Atchley, 55, reportedly had a medical emergency at 3:05 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18. He was transported from the Orange County Correctional Facility by ambulance to Baptist Hospital Orange.

The press release stated Atchley was examined by medical personnel at the hospital and determined to have “bleeding on his brain.” He was then transferred to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont and eventually to Methodist Hospital in Houston where he later died.

The Texas Rangers have been contacted and are continuing the investigation in Atchley’s death.
