Sales tax revenues continue to improve

ORANGE — Orange County continues to show improved sales tax revenue as allocations increased in most cities this month.

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs announced recently that state sales tax revenue in August was $2.39 billion, up 2.1 percent compared to August 2012. Sales tax revenue increased more than $7,600 in Orange County compared to this time last year.

“The latest monthly gains were led by sectors such as construction and the restaurant industry,” Combs said. “For the recently ended fiscal year, state sales tax revenue totaled $25.8 billion, an increase of 7.2 percent from fiscal 2012. Both business and consumer spending contributed to the gains for the year.”

The City of Orange experienced a 3.24 percent increase in revenue for the month and remains more than $100,000 ahead for the year-to-date.

Orange County’s second largest city, Vidor, continues to see improved sales tax payments every month. The city had an increase of more than $4,500 for the month and is 5.41 percent ahead of 2012 figures for the year.

Bridge City experienced a 2.78 percent increase for the month, when compared to this time in 2012. Pine Forest and Rose City improved for the month as well, by $1,000 and $3,000, respectively.

Pinehurst received a sales tax payment of $49,424.49, or a decrease of 10.58 percent, while West Orange had a decrease of more than $5,000 as well for the month. Both cities remain below year-to-date figures.

Combs’ office reports that the state was 2.8 percent above 2012 in its September allocation. Combs will send cities, counties, transit systems and special-purpose taxing districts their local sales-tax allocations totaling $575 million for September.

The sales tax figures represent monthly sales made in July.
