Texas Pecan Festival starts this week

GROVES, Texas — The transition from summer to fall would not be complete without the Texas Pecan Festival every September.

The 45th Annual Texas Pecan Festival is being held this week and features several days of food, fun, music, activities and lots of great carnival rides and games.

Music is always a big part of the festival and this year is no different. The Larry Tillery Band will perform from 8 p.m. - 11 p.m., Friday, while the Lamar University Show Band is on tap from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday the Texas Pecan Festival will turn into a dance party as area cover band Champagne Room performs starting at 8 p.m. This group is one of the hottest tickets in Southeast Texas and you see why firsthand. The Tonalta School of Music will have performers on stage at 11 a.m., Saturday, while Rachel Honza will follow at 12:30 p.m. Various dance groups and martial arts performances are scheduled throughout the day.

On Sunday, several choirs from Port Neches Middle School, Groves Middle School and Groves Elementary, along with the PN-G High School Indians Singers, will perform.

The carnival is open from 5 p.m. - 11 p.m., Thursday, while all aspects of the festival are open from 5 p.m. - 11 p.m., Friday. Arm bands for unlimited rides are available for $22 per person on these days.

The festival opens with a parade at 10 a.m., Saturday, and the carnival is open from 10 a.m. - 11 p.m., Saturday. Arm band session are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., and 5 p.m. to close, Saturday. Price for the arm band is $22 per session or an all day arm band is available for $35. The carnival is open from noon to 6 p.m., Sunday, and the arm band is available for $22.

A Washer Board Shoot-Out is scheduled for 6 p.m., Saturday, with an entry fee of $30. The event will take place in Lion’s Park, 6200 Jackson in Groves. Call Bert Lamson at 409-718-8184 for info.

A Horseshoe Tournament will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, also at Lion’s Park. Entry fees are $10 for singles and $30 for doubles. Applications are available at the Groves Chamber of Commerce.
