This is a good time to talk turkey

ORANGE — I sincerely hope you had a good Thanksgiving Day. Some want to submerge all religious special days or distort them into an unrecognizable caricature and have hijacked Thanksgiving Day. For example, changing Thanksgiving Day to “Turkey Day.” I hope you and your family followed the traditional path and met with family and friends and gave thanks as you remembered God’s bountiful blessings. My purpose is not to “talk turkey” in the sense of how large was the turkey you baked or what special recipe was used in its preparation. Maybe you chose to use some other meat for this special meal.

The phrase, “Let’s talk turkey” may not be one that’s familiar.. It’s used by many people. I have chosen this phrase, hopefully, to grab your attention. It is a legitimate phrase. It means, “to talk business, to be frank, to discuss a problem in a serious way with a real intention to solve it; to get down to the basic facts of a matter.”

I believe this is what each writer on this religious page intends to do. Each writer wishes to make a point that may in some way help us grow in our faith and produce a greater trust in our caring Heavenly Father.

Let’s talk turkey: one of the most basic facts of life is that “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Like it or not, believe it or not, we ALL are sinners. Unless something happens in us to change that, it spells eternal life or eternal death. To be frank and absolutely serious about it, there is only one source of eternal life: Jesus, praying to God, said: “And this is eternal life, that they [you and I] may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 17:3).

So what must one do? “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and  [you] shall be saved” (Acts 16:31), you will receive eternal life.

Let us really talk turkey:  “…if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, [you] will be saved” (Romans 10:9). Every Pastor who writes for this newspaper knows this simply formula: “A”—All have sinned. “B” – Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. “C” – confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus Christ. Herein is eternal life. That’s really talking turkey.
