Train Depot may return to former glory

ORANGE — The Train Depot located near the intersection of Green Ave. and 11th Street in Orange has the interest of persons wishing to purchase the location.

Director of Planning and Community Development Jimmie Lewis told the City of Orange Historic Preservation about the attention the property is currently seeing.

One interested party would like to turn the building into a restaurant specializing in Southern cuisine while rotating regional specialties on the weekends such as German, Italian, etc.

The person is collecting bids for the rehab of the building.

A contractor contacted Planning and Community Development concerning the specifications of replacing the windows and doors of the structure.

“He wanted to know what would be acceptable,” Lewis said. “He contacted me again to say he found a place that could match the original windows.”

Harry Wood, committee member, said he had a picture dating from 1920 that shows the doors on the end when needed for the refurbishing of the building.

“This is great for downtown Orange,” Lewis said. “The train depot is the last of real historic buildings remaining.”
