Vidor ISD to undergo changes

VIDOR —  Changes will soon be taking place in Vidor ISD.

The Vidor Independent School District will experience some changes to its administration this spring as Dr. Joe Burns, superintendent, and Dr. Jay Killgo, Vidor High School principal, have both announced they will be leaving the district for new positions.

Although a 21-day waiting period is required by Texas law before a contract is extended, both men have already reported they would be accepting the offered positions.

Burns, who was hired in early 2009 as Vidor ISD superintendent, has been announced as the lone finalist for the superintendent position with the Copperas Cove Independent School District.

Burns was not in the office Wednesday afternoon and could not be reached for comment.

Burns has led Vidor ISD during one of its most trying periods in recent years.

The district was faced with a major financial burden in early 2011 and was one of the first school districts in Southeast Texas to announce it would be reducing its staff in order to reduce expenses. The first round of cuts included 56 positions.

The district’s financial health has improved considerably since that time and Vidor ISD’s outlook for the future is promising.

Vidor High School principal Jay Killgo was named lone finalist for superintendent of Evadale Independent School District on Tuesday night.

“The door is open, so I need to walk through it,” Killgo said of the offer to become a superintendent. “It feels like a good fit, and Evadale is a good place.”

Killgo received his doctorate in education from Lamar University in 2010. He has been in education for 16 years, including the past five years as principal at Vidor High School.

“I hate to leave to Vidor because there are so many good people here,” Killgo added. “But the time is right. I’m really looking forward to this opportunity.”

Killgo will remain with Vidor ISD through the end of May and expects to begin his new job with Evadale ISD on June 1, 2012.
