Christmas Extravaganza a success

ORANGE — Food, music and Santa Claus were part of the festivities during the first annual Housing Authority Orange Christmas Extravaganza on Friday.

The employees of the Housing Authority Orange wanted to do something to  give back to the community.

“We hope to do this every year,” Ashley Charlot, section 8 counselor, said. “Everything was donated. We had several donations from local businesses.”

Charlot said the goal was to be able to give each child a gift.

The event was held for low income housing residents.

Interim Executive Director LaNita Brown said she glad it did not start raining for the party.

“This was Ashley’s brainstorm,” Brown said. “The employees decided that instead of drawing names and exchanging gifts, they wanted to give back to the community. It started with the presentation of an essay contest, and then Ashley had the idea for the party.”

Brown also said everything for the event was supplied through donations.

Businesses such as Granger Chevrolet, Orange Family Dental, Colbert/Ball Tax Services and non profit organization Invision Children and Youth Ministries were on hand during the event.

A live DeeJay kept the music playing as children enjoyed face painting, a visit with Santa Claus and playing in side a inflatable ‘bouncer’.

With over 100 in attendance during the event, Charlot hopes to see it become an even bigger success next year.

“This is awesome for the kids and the community,” Alonzo Williams said when asked what he thought about the event. “Especially for the children.”
