PH opts not joining Flood Map appeal

PINEHURST — City Council opted to not join other entities in the area in the FEMA Flood Map appeal.

Cost to the city for just starting the appeal would have been $85,000.

“Pinehurst did not have a huge change in the maps,” Pinehurst City Administrator Joe Parkhurst said. “Only two to three will be affected by the change.”

Parkhurst also said that the cost could rise to close to $1 million for the entities involved in the appeal process.

“Pinehurst has a limited income being such a small city,” Parkhurst said.

The council also approved proposed changes to the Pinehurst Police Officers Association contract for 2013-2014 fiscal year, finalizing the contract.

Replacing the Lexington Street Bridge is scheduled to begin January 6, 2014.

“The temporary road is already to go,” Parkhurst said. “It is about 50 yards which can be accessed from behind the medical building. It cost several thousands of dollars.”

Parkhurst said the funds for the temporary road were part of the grant funds for the project.

The Pinehurst Fire Department received a donation from BASF, a company located in Jefferson County, during the Tuesday evening meeting.

The company donated fifteen bunker sets as BASF is switching to another alternative.

“The sets are valued at $2,000 each,” Parkhurst said. “That is approximately $30,000. That is a nice gift for the fire department.”

The city will also seek new bids for the Sewer Rehabilitation project.

“We will rebid in January in hopes to get the price down to where it is needed for the project,” Parkhurst said.
