BC reaches new agreement with police association

BRIDGE CITY — City leaders have announced a new contract is in place with the law enforcement just in time for the holidays.

City councilmembers unanimously approved a new contract with the Bridge City Police Association during a regularly scheduled council meeting earlier this week.

According to Jerry Jones, city manager of Bridge City, the new contract is valid from Oct. 1, 2013 through Sept. 30, 2014 and includes four minor changes or additions from the previous contract.

“We have a good bargaining group for the city, and we certainly have had a good relationship the past few years with the police association,” Jones said. “Part of the reason behind that relationship is that we listen to them, and we give them what we can.”

The first change from the previous contract is a clothing allowance increase for dry-cleaning costs for law enforcement personnel who wear civilian clothing while on duty. This cost increases from $65 per month to $75 per month for each specified individual.

Jones said another change is that the city will now accept applications from individuals who are enrolled in an accredited law enforcement training academy.

“In the past we would not do this,” Jones said. “Each person had to be certified. Now, we will accept that application and consider it as long as they graduate from the academy.”

Additional revisions to the contract included a 3 percent pay increase for officers, which matches what all city employees received during the most recent approved city budget, and an increase in comp time from 120 hours to 160 hours.
