5k shot down in West Orange

WEST ORANGE — The City Council denied the request for a 5K run within the city.

West Orange -Stark Alumni Foundation submitted a request to hold the event with West Orange.

A letter to the council said the event is to offer support for “our students, school system and community”.

Councilman Dale Dardeau said he was concerned about closing the roads for three hours and asked if the alumni would hire the extra officers needed for the event.

“I am not against the run,” Dardeau said during the Monday night meeting. “But why not have it on the track?”

Chief of Police Michael Stelly said he had concerns of safety because the route had the participants crossing Western Ave. twice.

President of the West Orange -Stark Alumni Foundation Paul Thomas III said that traditional a 5K run is on the road. Thomas also said that he was hoping to get the cities of West Orange, Orange and Pinehurst involved to support the school system in a creative way.

Thomas said the Alumni was willing to talk to members that were police officers and ask them to volunteer.

“The foundation is willing to pay for the cost of the extra officers,” Thomas said.

Council member Shirley Bonnin asked if the item could be tabled until Thomas could see about volunteers for the event.

Stelly said that he understood that the foundation needed approval from the city in order to proceed to hire people and secure volunteers for the event.

In other business, the council approved the applications for Nicholas Morreale and Cameron Butcher for membership as a firefighter with the West Orange Volunteer Fire Department.

Mayor Roy McDonald said he felt there was a need for a Parks Rule Committee due to issues at the park recently. Theresa Van Meter is head of the committee.

The next West Orange City Council meeting is 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 14 due to the canvassing of votes from the election.
