City of Orange is entering into agreements with the Southern Processional Outboard Racing Tour (SPORT) for the 2014 Tunnel Boat Races and with Deep South Racing Association (DSRA).
“The Tunnel Boat Races are the Champion event of the season,” Director of Economic Development Jay Trahan said during the Tuesday morning city council meeting. “The races start in Port Neches and end the season here in Orange.”
Trahan said DSRA contacted the city concerning holding a races May 31 through June 1, 2014.
“The DSRA races are more like drag racing style,” Trahan said. “The races are in a straight line.”
Trahan said he was bringing the request for the agreements to the council as to finalize the SPORT calendars for 2014.
The Orange Convention & Visitors Bureau is considering a major headliner to perform at the Pavilion during the races.
“We have to see what we have in the budget,” Trahan said. “Also, as with any outdoors event, the risk of rain is a factor.”
The new race is part of the plan to add new events to the mix, according to Trahan.
“This adds another event to help stimulate the economy,” Trahan said. “With a concert that night, not only will it use our state of the art boat ramp, but the Pavilion as well.”
The Tunnel Boat Races are scheduled for September 19-21, 2014.
