BC teen dies in accident Saturday

The Orange Leader

A Bridge City teen was killed about 8 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Highways 62 and 87.

Witnesses told troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety Jacob Lee Smith, 16, ran a red light while traveling south on Highway 87 in a 2002 GMC Sierra pickup.

Smith struck the back of a empty tractor-trailer driven by Kirt Kruse, 43, of Vidor as he was turning south on Highway 87 from Highway 62.

Emergency personnel used the “jaws of life” to remove Smith from the vehicle but were unable to save him.

Precinct 2 Judge Derry Dunn pronounced Smith dead at the scene. Kruse did not receive any injuries.

Law enforcement from Orange County Sheriff’s Office and Bridge City Police Department assisted at the scene.
