Local businesses in Pinehurst urged to get security box system

A box has been installed inside the Pinehurst Volunteer Fire Department’s fire truck, but that is only part of the solution for businesses in an emergency situation.
According to the International Building Code, businesses are required to have access for firefighters to a structure or an area which is secured. In an emergency, firefighters will need to have the immediate ability to enter the structure. The code official is authorized to require a key box to be installed in an accessible location. The key box shall be an approved type and contain keys to gain access, according to information from Grady Gray, PVFD fire chief.
For ease and access and to streamline their operation, the PVFD has instituted the use of the Knox Box brand security key boxes. Keys will not be the only thing needed inside the box, but also pertinent information such as contact phone numbers and location of fire sprinkler equipment.
The Knox Box is keyed specifically for the PVFD and would only be used in the case of an emergency or to ensure the safety of the property, according to Gray.
There are boxes in service on businesses in Orange, Beaumont and Vidor, Gray said. Gray added he hopes Pinehurst businesses will comply as well.
The Knox Box Rapid Entry System was specifically developed for the fire department. With one master key, they can gain access to commercial and residential property.
Each Knox Box purchased by the property owner is keyed to a single master key controlled by the fire department. With the Knox System, there is no cost to the fire department, no waiting for a property owner to unlock the door in the middle of the night, and no forcing the door open to gain entry. The Knox Rapid Entry System reduces response time, property damage and the liability for lost keys, according to information from Knox.
The key can also be used to protect store inventory from unnecessary water damage caused by delayed sprinkler shut-off.
Gray said he encourages all businesses to obtain the security box.
