Deweyville ISD closes in advance of flooding

DEWEYVILLE — With the Sabine River beginning to flood sections of this small community, the local school district has decided to halt classes until next week.

Rick Summers, superintendent of the Deweyville Independent School District, has canceled classes today and Friday for students because of the current flooding situation which is now beginning to affect district residents.

According to DISD personnel, buses were able to run routes as normal on Wednesday and attendance was at normal levels also. However, with the Sabine River continuing to rise and flooding of homes and roads expected, the district did not believe this would be the case today or Friday.

Summers will reportedly decide over the weekend, after being able to determine what conditions are like within the school district, whether school will resume normal hours of operation on Monday or not.
