Mexican Navy stranded in Orange waters

Hurricane Ike was not enough to keep members of the Mexican Navy from docking at the pier near the old Navy base in Orange.

The ship arrived a few days before the Hurricane and weathered the rising waters and strong winds.

Crewmember, Gadeal Guzman Mendoza, said they tied the ship with extra lines during the storm.

However, he admits the crew of 52 members were a bit worried becasue the "water was rising very fast."

Through the night and the following day the winds howled and gently rocked the ship. Mendoza said all the crew were OK after the storm moved out.

"We are all doing fine," he said.

The Navy crew will remain in Orange until the port is reopened.

"We are waiting for them to clear the channel so we can go home," Mendoza said.

Members of the Mexican Navy come to Orange to the company Texspan located at the old Navy pier to pick up supplies about three times per year. Hopefully next time their trip will be much easier and with fewer hurricanes, he added jokingly.
