The new school year begins Monday for most area school children, and this includes the students of the Bridge City Independent School District.
According to Paul Davis, Bridge City Chief of Police, this next week could be very trying for motorists traveling through certain parts of Bridge City as classes resume, most especially at Sims Elementary.
The school is currently located in the parking lot near the Bridge City High School baseball field, just off Osborne Road. This campus is comprised of portable buildings and is only meant to be a temporary location until the district is able to construct its new elementary campus on FM 1442.
“Motorists need to be mindful of this area for the first few days of school,” Davis said. “This campus deals with small children from kindergarten to second grade, so parents will be walking many of these children to class in the morning and picking them up in the evening, and there is limited parking. The road will be busy.”
Davis said motorists should consider finding alternate routes as Osborne Road and Bower will most likely have heavy school traffic.
“If possible, then motorists should consider alternate routes,” Davis added. “If people are waiting in line to turn into the parking lot, then they are not doing anything illegal. The Bridge City Police Department and Bridge City ISD Police Department will be patrolling this area.”
Davis also said the police department has ordered the new signs which indicate it is illegal to use a cell phone while driving in all school zones.
“Once these signs are up, we will begin enforcing this new ordinance,” he said.
All other campuses in Bridge City ISD have more adequate parking or waiting areas, and Davis does not expect any issues at these locations.
“We just want to stress patience and tolerance,” Davis said. “Be mindful of others and what is going on around you. We just want to make sure the new school year gets off to a great start for all of our parents and children.”
