It’s a sure bet Don Morris, 63, of Orange, hit the jackpot when he became a dealer at Isle of Capri in Lake Charles.
Morris has been working as a dealer for more than 10 years, but before then worked as a timekeeper for a local construction company. But the thrill and excitement of the casinos was the big payoff for him. His ace in the hole is his five day a week, 40 hour job that he enjoys.
“It was something I always wanted to do so I went and applied,” he said.
After attending dealer school for two months he was then out on the floor. During his career he has was worked Roulette, 3-card poker and Black Jack tables.
Morris said he has met many people during his career as a dealer. Each of them brings their own unique personalty to the table.
“You meet every personality on the planet,” Morris said. He added with a chuckle, “We get some real characters.”
Some people at the casino are regulars and as they walk by they exchange their “hellos” with him.
Morris said the job is “for the most part a lot of fun” and very “entertaining.”
One of the largest amounts won during a game on Morris’ table was $20,000. However, he said he has seen larger winners on other tables.
“Some winners holler and get very excited, while others never say a word,” Morris said.
Although it is customary to tip dealers after a big win, not all people do. However, one man on his first trip to the casino won a large amount and tipped Morris $3,000.
Morris said when not dealing cards he likes to play a little poker. However, according to casino rules, he cannot do so there. But, he does enjoy an occassional game of 7-card stud or Texas Hold’em elsewhere when he has the time to win, lose or draw.
