BC intersection site of wreck

BRIDGE CITY A two-vehicle collision Monday afternoon sent two people to area hospitals with minor injuries.

A pickup truck traveling north on State Highway 87, known as Texas Avenue within Bridge City, collided with a Jeep Cherokee about 5:15 p.m. Monday at Berwick Road, which is near the intersection of State Highway 62.

According to Sgt. Ronnie Denton of the Bridge City Police Department, the unidentified driver of the maroon Jeep Cherokee was attempting to turn left across traffic towards Berwick when it was struck by the truck in the outside northbound lane.

Denton said neither person involved in the incident was severely injured.

This intersection has been the site of numerous collisions. Typically in the late afternoon, traffic frequently builds up as vehicles approach the Highway 62 and Highway 87 intersection due to the amount of vehicles attempting to turn left onto Highway 62. The turning lane overfills and slows traffic approaching the intersection in the inside lane. However, traffic generally continues to flow unimpeded in the outside lane.

This same intersection has been the site of at least two major wrecks in the last year.

In September 2006, a Bridge City Independent School District school bus collided with a pickup truck which was attempting to turn left across the median onto Berwick, and then, in April, an elderly couple was involved in a collision with an Allied Waste Services trash truck when they attempted to turn left across Texas Avenue.

Both of these incidents occurred in the afternoon hours as well.

The speed limit on this stretch of road is posted at 55 mph.

Denton said no citations were issued after Monday’s incident.
