VIDOR —
Every parent wants their children to be more successful than they are. Mike Quinn believes his resignation from the Vidor Independent School District Board of Trustees will do just that.
Quinn resigned from the Vidor ISD Board of Trustees earlier this month, a position which he had just won re-election for in May, to make room for the potential hiring of his son, Zachary Quinn, as the new head coach of the Vidor High School basketball team.
“Resigning from the board is something I had no problem doing if it allowed Zach to be hired as the new basketball coach,” Quinn said of his son. “They made an excellent choice by hiring him as coach and as a history teacher.”
Quinn said he enjoyed his time on the school board, but district residents should not expect him to just fade away.
“I intend to continue attending school board meetings as much as possible and stay informed,” Quinn continued. “I intend to run again for school board next May, if the residents of the school district will have me.”
Quinn had no choice but to step down from the school board because it was required by the Texas Government Code as it pertains to nepotism. Quinn said he would have had to resign anyway because the district hired his sister-in-law, Linda Adams, as a secondary curriculum specialist for English-language arts and social studies.
Quinn said he believes his son’s hiring as head basketball coach and a teacher will make a big impact at Vidor High School.
“He is going to make these kids work hard and be a better team,” Quinn continued. “He will expect the players on his team to conduct themselves better than any of the students on campus, plus he is an excellent history educator.”
The Board of Trustees accepted Quinn’s resignation earlier this month, and, at the specially called June 9 school board meeting, announced the appointment of Eddy Byerly as a new board member.
“The board members appointed a good man in Eddy Byerly to the school board,” Quinn said. “He is a super guy and has a high interest in education.”
Byerly, 53, is a firefighter with the City of Beaumont. He is married and has two adult children, both of whom attended and graduated from Vidor High School.
