BRIDGE CITY Cheryl Royal called it an honor to have the opportunity to learn from some of best after she was selected to participate a summer institute called “The U.S. Constitution and American History.”

Royal, who teaches several history classes and psychology at Bridge City High School, will attend the institute at the LBJ Library and Museum in Austin this month.

She was one of 40 teachers from across Texas to participate in lectures and workshops which will examine important constitutional topics in our nation’s history.

“What a great opportunity,” Royal said. “I hope to learn a lot and bring the knowledge back to our students at Bridge City High School. It is an amazing honor.”

The institute faculty includes leading scholars such as H. W. Brands, Albert S. Broussard, George Forgie, Sanford Levinson, Gretchen Ritter and Pulitzer-Prize winning historians Jack Rakove and David Oshinsky.

“Humanities Texas is pleased to include this outstanding teacher from Bridge City in this educational initiative,” said Executive Director Michael L. Gillette. “Bringing teachers together to exchange ideas and learn from leading scholars is an effective way to ensure that Texas students continue to receive the best possible educational opportunities.”

A companion institute sponsored by Humanities Texas and the University of Texas at San Antonio will be held the following week on the UTSA campus.

“The U.S. Constitution and American History” is made possible with a “We the People” grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and additional support from the Houston Endowment.

The state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Humanities Texas develops and supports diverse programs across the state, including lectures, oral history projects, teacher institutes, museum exhibitions and documentary films.
