Deweyville woman indicted for falsifying records

From staff reports

BEAUMONT — A federal grand jury is calling a Deweyville woman a liar.

Denise Sloan, 47, was indicted Wednesday in a Beaumont federal courtroom for allegedly falsifying entries made into a log related to her official work duties.

According to court documents, Sloan is charged with making false or fraudulent entries relating to her employment on two separate occasions. The fraudulent entries were made in conjunction with her official duties of keeping accounts and records of the United States Postal Service. If convicted, Sloane could face up to 10 years imprisonment, and a fine of $250,000.

It is important to note that an indictment should not be considered as evidence of guilt and that all persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case is being investigated by the United States Postal Service, Office of the Inspector General, and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Joe Batte.
