LC-M students scores add up in TAKS math

Tommy Mann, Jr.
The Orange Leader

Fifth and eighth grade students in the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Consolidated Independent School District continue to perform well in the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills mathematics test.

According to information provided by Jim Armstrong, LC-M CISD director of student and personnel services, students in each grade level, as a whole, improved over 2008 results.

Students in third, fifth, and eighth grades are required to meet standard on their specific test subjects of the TAKS in order to move on to the next grade. Students in eleventh and twelfth grades have five opportunities to meet standard on the exit level TAKS test in order to graduate.

A campus must have at least 55 percent of its fifth or eighth grade students meet standard in math in the 2008-2009 school year to be an “Academically Acceptable” campus. To be “Recognized” a campus must have 75 percent of its students meet standard in each subject, and 90 percent must meet standard in each test subject to be considered “Exemplary.”

Fifth graders from Little Cypress Intermediate and Mauriceville Elementary improved by two percentage points over 2008 results as 90 percent met standard this year. This is also six percentage points more than the state average.

According to Armstrong, 49 percent of the students which met standard also earned commended performance recognition.

Eighth grade students from Little Cypress Junior High and Mauriceville Middle School, as a whole, also improved by two percentage points over 2008.

After the first administration of the TAKS math test, 81 percent of eighth grade students have met standard, which is also two percentage points more than the eighth grade state average of 79 percent.

Of those meeting standard, 17 percent earned commended performance recognition.

Armstrong said the district is pleased with the initial results and is striving to improve on the second administration of TAKS math on May 19.

“We are very proud of the combined effort of all our students and staff with regard to our student success on TAKS,” Armstrong said. “We are proud of our performance as a district and are continually looking for ways to improve our student’s success.”
