VIDOR —
For more than 20 years, the Vidor Rotary Club has held its annual fundraiser dinner on election day, but Hurricane Ike changed all that in 2008.
The Vidor Rotary Club’a annual Oyster, Chicken and Fish Dinner is being held from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., today, inside the cafeteria at Vidor Junior High School, located at State Highway 12 and Claiborne Street.
The meal includes a choice of either fried oysters, fish, chicken strips or a combination, which includes side items like french fries, cole slaw, hush puppies and a drink for $10. Desserts are also available for an extra charge.
Tickets are available from any Vidor Rotary Club member or inside Capital One Bank on Main Street in Vidor. Tickets will also be available at the door.
Although the event is typically held every November, it was an easy decision
by the rotary club to postpone the 2008 event.
“The only reason we decided to reschedule the dinner was because of the hurricane,” said Barbara Faulk, Vidor Rotary Club secretary. “Everyone had spent their extra money on evacuating for Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, and then more money on clean-up and repairs. If we had held the dinner like normal, then no one would have been able to contribute to the scholarship.”
Over the years, the rotary club dinner has raised approximately $65,000 in scholarship money for Vidor High School students.
“We try to give away three scholarships every year, and we expect to do the same this year too,” Faulk added. “They are typically $1,000 each, and we are hoping to match that amount again.”
In an effort to raise extra funds for this year’s scholarships, the Vidor Rotary Club is holding a special giveaway of Dallas Cowboys memorabilia.
Approximately 20 items including a Roger Staubach autographed football in a display case, a framed Staubach jersey, a Troy Aikman autographed and framed jersey, a Tony Romo signed football and more will be available.
Tickets are $5 each and it is a winner take all drawing.
Although the oyster dinner has been moved to today, Faulk said the Vidor Rotary Club has no plans to keep it this way.
“I don’t think it is a permanent move because people have come to know and expect it every year at that time,” Faulk said. “It’s a tradition.”
