HOOP WRAP: Mustangs throttle Cards, 81-38

WEST ORANGE — Playing in dominating fashion, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs held the Bridge City Cardinals to just one field goal in the first half as they went on to cruise to a 81-38 District 21-3A victory at Mustang Gym Friday night.

The Mustangs (20-10, 9-2) outscored the Cardinals (11-18, 2-9) 38-4 in the first half, 20-2 in the first quarter and 18-2 in the second.

WO-S’ press wore down the Cardinals as Bridge City coughed up the ball 33 times.

Four Mustang players reached double figures.

Sophomore Chase Rutledge led the way with 20 points. He buried three three-point shots and scored 13 in the second half.

Laquarious Paige chimed in with a double-double, scoring 12 points to go along with 12 rebounds while also adding six assists. Post Tevin Terrell filtered in 11 points and snared six rebounds while Travon Blanchard tallied 10 points. Corey Carcisse scored nine points for the Mustangs while John Scott grabbed seven rebounds.

The Mustangs will travel to 21-3A champion Silsbee (24-7, 11-0) Tuesday. Silsbee won the outright title by downing Hardin-Jefferson (30-4, 8-3) 77-69 at Ford Park Arena Friday. WO-S is currently in second-place and can clinch second if it defeats Silsbee Tuesday. If H-J defeats Hamshire-Fannett Tuesday and WO-S falls to Silsbee then WO-S and H-J would be in a tie for second and would likely play later next week for second and third-place playoff seedings.

WO-S finished with a 37-25 rebounding edge.

Bryce Sampere led the Cardinal attack with nine points, including Bridge City’s only field goal in the first half, which came in the second quarter. Brett Philpott scored seven points, all coming in the fourth quarter. Alex Bingham and Tanner Cervenka added six points apiece. Kane Vice paced the Cardinals with six rebounds while Dagan Smith added four.

Paige, Rutledge and Blanchard combined for 15 Mustang points in the first period. Bridge City’s only points came on two free throws by Bingham. Seven different Mustangs scored in the second period while Sampere had the Cardinal field goal.

Bridge City battled hard in the third period as both teams scored 13 points. Bingham and Cervenka had two field goals each for the Redbirds.

Both teams exploded in the final period, totaling 51 points with the Mustangs scoring 30 of them.

Rutledge scored nine in the quarter while Terrell had seven and Tre Spencer scored five of his eight points in the period.

The Mustangs finished with 16 turnovers.

WO-S was 10-of-14 from the free-throw line while the Cardinals were 2-of-3. There were only 20 fouls called the entire game.

Bridge City will close out its season at home Tuesday when they play host to rival Orangefield.
