HOOP WRAP: Mustangs survive Sampere, Cards 80-57

BRIDGE CITY — Withstanding a first-half shooting barrage by Bridge City’s Bryce Sampere, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs went on a 45-24 tear in the second half to turn back the Cardinals 80-57 in District 21-3A action at Cardinal Gym Tuesday night.

Sampere finished with a game-high 32 points for the Cardinals (10-13, 1-4) and connected on seven three-point shots. He scored 22 of his points and buried six three-pointers in the first half, 16 of them coming in the second period to keep the Cardinals within striking distance as they trailed the Mustangs 35-33 at intermission.

The Mustangs (16-8, 5-0) simply wore down the Cardinals in the second half and with their tenacious press they forced Bridge City into 27 turnovers.

Mustang forward Travon Blanchard had perhaps his best game ever in a WO-S uniform, scoring a team-high 21 points while snagging eight rebounds.

The Mustangs now turn their focus to a first-place showdown when the Silsbee Tigers come rolling into Mustang Gym Friday night.

The Tigers (17-7, 5-0) defeated Hardin-Jefferson (25-3, 3-2) 81-76 Tuesday night.

Blanchard scored 12 of his points in the first period alone and he converted several forced turnovers off the Mustang press and converted them into easy layups.

WO-S jumped out to a 16-5 lead as they forced 11 Cardinal turnovers in the first period but the Cardinals trimmed it to 20-13 at the end of the period.

Laquarious Paige had 14 points and eight boards for the Mustangs and threw down two thunderous dunks, one in the first quarter and another in the third.

A nice scoring drive by Deionte Thompson put the Mustangs up 35-27 with a little more than a minute left in the first half but Sampere got the Redbirds within two by draining two long-range three-point missiles to end the half.

WO-S forced Bridge City into just one turnover in the second period but were able to turn on the heat in the third.

The Mustangs were able to go on a 24-10 third-quarter scoring jaunt and forced the Cardinals into eight turnovers.

Mustang guard Brandon Joubert scored all six of his points in the period while Blanchard added five more and Chase Rutledge scored four.

Sampere fired in eight of the Cardinals’ 10 points in the quarter.

WO-S outpointed the Cardinals 21-14 in the final session. Corey Carcisse scored six of his nine points for WO-S in the period.

Cardinal post Alex Bingham, who had an excellent game with a double-double of 13 points and 17 rebounds, scored six points in the fourth.

The Mustangs finished with a 38-32 rebounding edge.

Tyrant Thompson had seven points and five boards for WO-S while Tevin Terrell snatched seven rebounds.

Tanner Cervenka contributed seven points for the Cardinal attack while Byron Bacon hauled in five rebounds.

The Mustangs committed just seven turnovers on the night and went 12-of-20 from the free-throw line. The Cardinals, who will visit rival Orangefield Friday, were a solid 14-of-17 from the charity stripe.
