HOOP WRAP: Big third propels Mustangs past Bobcats

Utilizing a huge spurt in the third quarter, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs got past the Orangefield Bobcats 71-50 in District 21-3A action at Bobcat Gym Tuesday night.
Leading 31-27 early in the third period, the Mustangs closed out the quarter with a 24-3 run and still remain undefeated in 21-3A action.
Laquarious Paige and Tevin Terrell led the Mustangs in the third-period jaunt. Paige filtered in nine of his game-high 23 points in the quarter while Terrell scored all seven of his points in the period.
The Mustangs (14-8, 3-0) forced the Bobcats (12-8, 1-3) into 23 turnovers.
Carl Wiley had another solid outing for the Bobcat attack by scoring 22 points while grabbing five rebounds. Carmichael contributed 11 points and five boards for the Bobcats. Cody Angelle had six points on two three-pointers while Levi Shores contributed five points and led Orangefield with a game-high seven rebounds.
Ten Mustangs got into the scoring column as they used yet another balanced attack and a full-court press to turn back an opponent.
Mustang post Tyrant Thompson tallied 10 points and grabbed five rebounds. Chase Rutledge scored eight points while Brandon Joubert added seven. Paige and Travon Blanchard led the Mustangs with six rebounds apiece while Deionte Thompson, who had a great effort on the defensive end, and Joubert added five rebounds apiece.
The Mustangs led 11-10 at the end of the first period. Wiley kept the Bobcats close by scoring seven points in the quarter.
Six different Mustangs scored in the second quarter with Paige and Thompson scoring four points apiece to help give WO-S a 27-20 edge at intermission.
The Bobcats pulled to within 31-27 with 6:21 left in the third after a Angelle three-point launch.
The Mustangs then took over with Terrell muscling his way into the paint for a pair of quick buckets and then WO-S pulled away after Paige, Joubert and Jarrius Tims buried three-point shots. The Mustangs led 55-30 going to the fourth quarter.
Orangefield outpointed the Mustangs 20-16 in the final period. The Wiley’s combined for 18 of the points with Carl scoring 12 while Carmichael chimed in with six. Paige and Rutledge scored six points apiece for WO-S in the quarter.
The Mustangs finished with a 34-28 rebounding edge. WO-S finished with 15 turnovers. The Bobcats drained 15-of-23 from the free-throw line while the Mustangs went 8-of-16.
The Mustangs return to action Friday when they play host to the Buna Cougars while the Bobcats will have their first half of district bye. Orangefield will return to action next Tuesday when they visit Buna.
BEAUMONT - The Beaumont Ozen Panthers defeated the Little CYpress-Mauriceville Bears 69-46 in District 20-4A action at Panther Gym Tuesday night.
The Panthers (11-9, 3-1) outscored the Bears (9-14, 0-4) 17-5 in the first period and led 30-19 at the half. After leading 48-36 at the end of the third, the Panthers closed out the game with a 21-10 run.
Blake Fuss led the Bears with 11 points. Taylor Peveto tallied 10 points while Jace Robertson added nine.
Wayne Wyngerde and ALex Williams led Ozen with 10 points apiece while Christian Bolton added nine.
The Bears will be seeking their first 20-4A win Friday when they play host to Lumberton.
FANNETT - The Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns used a 21-10 third-period run and then held off the Bridge City Cardinals 59-51 in District 21-3A play at Longhorn Gym Tuesday night.
Bryce Sampere led the Cardinals (10-11, 1-2) with 19 points while Tanner Cervenka and Adrian Schubarth added seven points apiece.
Darius Riley led H-F (9-13, 2-2) with 15 points while Jordan Brown and Steven Hubert added nine apiece.
The Cardinals will travel to Hardin-Jefferson Friday.
WEST ORANGE - The Orangefield Lady Bobcats broke away with a 35-20 jaunt in the second half to take down the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs 57-36 in District 21-3A play at Mustang Gym Tuesday night.
Morgan Moss led the Lady Bobcats (12-9, 4-2) with a double-double as she tallied 19 points and yanked down 10 rebounds.
Orangefield guard Kacey LeBlanc filled up the stat sheet, scoring 16 points to go along with seven steals and four assists. Morgan Worthy filtered in eight points and had five rebounds and four steals. Megan Burton had four steals and four assists and Paige Perales had five boards.
Jordan led the Lady Mustangs (1-4 in district) with nine points.
Wo-S will visit Buna Friday while the Lady Bobcats have a bye. Orangefield returns to action Tuesday when they host Buna.
