HOOP ROUNDUP: Hawks take down Bears; Lady Cards rip WO-S

LITTLE CYPRESS — Hardin-Jefferson proved once again how formidable they will be when the District 21-3A hoop campaign rolls around.

The Hawks placed four players in double figures and used a 32-15 run in the first half as they took down the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears 75-55 at The Bear Cave Tuesday night in non-district action.

The Bears (2-5) were within 13-11 of the Hawks (10-1) in the first period. However, H-J forced the Bears into seven turnovers in the Bears’ last eight possessions in the period to push its lead to 24-14 at the end of the first period.

The Hawks then went on a 21-12 run in the second period to lead comfortably 45-26 at intermission.

H-J led 66-45 after the third period. The Bears got as close as 17 points in the fourth period.

Guard Devonte Johnson led the balanced H-J attack, finishing with a game-high 17 points.

Zjori Bosha filtered in 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Hawks. Sophomore post Dylan Mays roamed the paint for 12 points and seven boards while forward Braden Harmon chimed in with 14 points.

Taylor Peveto paced three Bears in double figures, leading the way with 16 points. Guard Jace Robertson pumped in 14 points, eight of them coming in the first period in which he buried two three-point shots. Teondre Gant popped for 10 points and buried two three-point shots.

Christian Wendt added seven points and a game-high nine rebounds for LC-M while Robertson had five boards and Trumaine Elmore grabbed four.

The Bears finished with 29 turnovers while the Hawks committed just 16.

H-J finished with a slight 28-26 rebounding edge.

The Bears finished 11-of-17 from the free-throw line while the Hawks went 8-of-14.

The Hawks will be hosting their annual tournament Thursday through Saturday in Sour Lake, which the Bears will also be competing in.

BC girls down WO-S

BRIDGE CITY - The Bridge City Lady Cardinals pounded out a decisive 56-23 win over the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs in the District 21-3A opener for both teams Tuesday night at Cardinal Gym.

The Lady Cardinals (6-5, 1-0) went on a 16-4 tear to open the contest and led 29-13 at the half.

Bridge City finished the second half with a 27-10 jaunt.

Freshman Bailee Bacon powered the Lady Cardinal arsenal, outscoring the Lady Mustangs (0-1 in district) by herself with 24 points. She connected on five three-pointers and also added five steals.

Alexus Henry chimed in with 17 points while also collecting seven rebounds and six steals.

Caylin Choate had a solid all-around game for the Lady Cardinals. She had five points to go along with nine assists, nine steals and five rebounds.

Kasey Frederick had five points and eight boards for BC while Harleigh Myers added five rebounds.

Nekia Platt led WO-S with seven points.

The Lady Cardinals will participate in the Silsbee Tournament Thursday through Saturday and will open up Thursday at 9 a.m. in a matchup with Silsbee.

The Lady Mustangs, meanwhile, will compete in the Deweyville Tournament starting Thursday.
