FANNETT, Texas —
The Orangefield Bobcats left no doubt Friday night that they look to contend for a playoff spot this football season.
The Bobcats used a potent running game in lethal fashion to claim a 54-28 victory over the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns on Friday, and, in doing so, earned their first victory in District 21-3A play.
“We are hard to stop offensively, when we aren’t shooting ourselves in the foot,” said Bobcat head coach Josh Smalley, “Hamshire-Fannett is a quality ball club, and they have three kids in the backfield that can go, but our kids did a fantastic job on both sides of the ball.”
Orangefield (2-4, 1-1) wasted little time in asserting its dominance Friday by jumping out to a 12-0 lead after the first quarter thanks to rushing touchdowns from Carmichael Wiley and Carl Wiley.
For every Hamshire-Fannett response (2-4, 0-2), the Bobcats were even quicker to respond as quarterback Eric Truncale scored on a 1-yard keeper off the left end less than one minute after the Longhorns Jordan Brown exploded for a 33-yard touchdown gallup.
Another big play by the Longhorns, this time a 35-yard run from Travis Appling, closed the Orangefield lead to 19-14, but, again, the Bobcats answered with another quick strike courtesy of a Carl Wiley 20-yard dash before half-time and a 27-14 Bobcats lead.
“Being healthy was the key to our success,” Smalley added. “Playing our tough non-district schedule against teams like Newton and Jasper, really made us better prepared for district, and it showed (Friday night).”
The Bobcats emerged from halftime and dominated the third quarter as Tyron Como, who rushed for 102 yards on 13 totes, cut through the Longhorns defense for a 40-yard touchdown run and Carl Wiley, who finished the game with 20 carries and 254 yards, exploded for a 53-yard burst on the first play following a fourth down stop of the Longhorns.
The Bobcats defense put plenty of pressure on both Longhorns quarterbacks, Dante Smith and Kendrick King, as the aggressive unit pulled in five sacks on the night and hurried the quarterbacks twice as often. They also picked off Smith twice as Zac Carruth and Devin Allen both had interceptions.
Orangefield will take on the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks in Orangefield next Friday, while Hamshire-Fannett travels to Buna in District 21-3A play.
