The Orange Leader
LITTLE CYPRESS —
It’s simple math for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears Friday night when they play host to the Vidor Pirates.
The Battlin’ Bears (4-5, 3-3) must beat the Pirates (8-1, 5-1) and must have Beaumont Central (3-6, 3-3) lose at first-place Nederland (8-1, 6-0) to earn the fourth-place playoff berth out of District 20-4A.
If LC-M and Central remain tied Friday night, Central would have the tiebreaker edge on the Bears after the Jaguars defeated LC-M 44-28 last Saturday night.
Of course, Coach Jeff Mathews’ Pirates have already sealed a playoff berth after downing Livingston 42-21 last week.
Vidor will certainly look to maintain its momentum at Battlin’ Bear Stadium and will be tested mightily by Coach Randy Crouch’s hungry Bears.
The Pirates will check in with 20-4A’s top-ranked offense, one that is averaging 430.8 yards a game. They will face a Bears’ defense that is allowing 305.8 yards per outing.
The Pirates have churned out 3,549 yards on the ground alone, averaging 8.3 yards a carry.
Vidor senior quarterback Montana Quirante makes to offense flow. Quirante has piled up 1,391 yards and a stunning 26 touchdowns on 149 carries.
Fullback Justin Moore has muscled his way to 894 yards and 12 TDs on 98 carries. Tailback Thomas Novak has 511 yards and three TDs on 65 carries.
Vidor has outscored their opponents 357-123 for the season and have yet to allow a point in the first quarter.
The Bears have one of the more balanced offensive units in 20-4A and average 313.1 yards a game. They will tangle with a Pirate defense that gives up just 209.3 yards a game.
Senior tailback Alex Sezer has 1,308 yards and 17 touchdowns on 213 carries and has broke the 100-yard game mark in eight of nine games.
Bear junior quarterback Caleb Harley went over the 1,000-yard passing mark against Central.
Harley has completed 78-of-148 passes for 1,148 yards and 11 touchdowns and has nine interceptions.
Harley has three dependable receivers in Dalton Doyle (27-501-5), Casey Viator (27-325-3) and Billy Jones (22-293-3).
