Playoffs on the line between Cards, Bobcats

BRIDGE CITY —

Bridge City’s Cardinals and Orangefield’s Bobcats have one final game to decide who will represent District 21-3A as the third place team in the playoffs.

The two rivals are both 3-2 in the district standings and this year’s Bayou Bowl will not come down to points, it is a winner take all.

This one is hard to size up especially since both teams are both 4-5 overall this year.

Bridge City will at least be at home at Larry B. Ward Stadium but the short drive for the Orangefield Faithful means the visitors’ side of the stadium will be packed.

The Cardinals come in averaging 219.9 yards of offense a game while giving up 290.3 yards on defense through the first nine games.

Bridge City’s offense will look once again to the powerful legs of Ashton Hunter who has 1,023 yards on 185 carries with five touchdowns. Kruz Dearbonne has 212 yards rushing and two scores.

Daniel Faulk has thrown for 563 yards and nine touchdowns with four interceptions. He has 48 completions in 126 passing attempts.

Bridge City’s leading receiver this year is Adrian Schubarth with 12 catches for 137 yards while Colin Smith has 11 receptions for 116 yards. Tanner Cervenka might only have eight catches this year but five were touchdown grabs. He has 156 yards receiving and averages 19.5 yards a catch.

Carl Wiley can add an impressive highlight for the Bobcats’ season by going over the 1,000 yard mark as the running back comes into the game with 990 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Quarterback Eric Truncale has 752 yards rushing on 95 carries with seven touchdowns while Tyron Como has 358 yards and averages 6.1 yards a carry.

Orangefield averages 326.1 yard of offense a game while giving up 352.7 yards a contest on defense.
