Clear Brook rallies to down Pirates, 33-29

VIDOR — The Vidor Pirates seemed to do all they needed to do for a win Friday night against the Clear Brook Wolverines but in the end they fell short 33-29.

The Pirates fought hard to keep the game close all night and even took the lead with three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

With Clear Brook driving down the field trying to salvage the win Vidor’s Alex Boutte seemed to come down with the game winning interception but an extremely questionable call gave the ball to the Wolverines the ball four yards short of pay dirt with a minute remaining in regulation. Two plays later the Wolverines’ Joseph Mobley carried the ball in from two yards out for the eventual winning touchdown.

Clear Brook’s head coach Paul Lanier after the game said “These calls even out over the course of the game. I think our guy came down with the ball, but over the years I have been of both sides of these calls”.

Vidor coach Jeff Matthews did an outstanding job keeping his players motivated to the final buzzer. There was plenty of tough breaks but it seemed nothing could discourage the Pirates.

The Pirates did turn the ball over three times while the Wolverines didn’t cough it up once.

The Pirates offense was lead by several outstanding performances. Sage Smith ran for 191 yards on 16 carries including two for touchdowns.

Smith’s 44 yard run with three minutes remaining put the Pirates in the lead. Freshman Heylon Leckelt added 98 on 13 carries.

Leckelt also scored a crucial touchdown in a fourth down situation running 31 yards on a reverse to get the Pirates back into scoring position.

Geth Simmons threw several big passes including a 29 yard pass to Marcus Moore that got the Pirates on the board in the first quarter. Simmons passed for 87 yards, going 6-for-16 and was picked off twice.

The Pirates actually outgained the Wolverines 455-264.

Mobley completed 6-of-9 passes for 135 yards for the Wolverines. Cody Williams had three catches for 78 yards.

Derek Simmons led the Clear Brook running attack with 118 yards on 18 carries and scored a touchdown.

The Pirates will be off next week as they head into the bye week.
