Mustangs head to Reservation to face Indians

PORT NECHES —  Both the West Orange-Stark Mustangs and Port Neches-Groves Indians got off to excellent starts to their seasons last week as both get ready to tangle at The Reservation Friday night.

The Mustangs took down Little Cypress-Mauriceville 21-3 to win the Orange Bowl while the Indians throttled Silsbee 45-21.

The Mustangs (1-0) received a top-notch effort from a young defensive unit that held LC-M to just 164 total yards. The Bears had 115 yards on 31 carries and completed just 9-of-25 passes for 49 yards.

WO-S tailback Chris James darted for 90 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Mustang quarterback Chase Rutledge passed for 112 yards and rushed for 59 yards and a touchdown.

The Indians (1-0) torched Silsbee for more than 400 yards of total offense.

PN-G quarterback Ky Walker completed 26-of-31 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns. PN-G tailback Brent Halfin had a big night as well, rushing for 137 yards on 27 totes. Indian receiver Jeremiah Rose had 11 receptions for 130 yards and two scores.

The Mustangs eased past the Indians 34-13 last season at The Reservation.

WO-S notched 355 total yards with quarterback Jimmy Salter passing for 184 yards and two scores.

The Mustang defense limited the Indians to a mere 115 yards of offense including just 27 yards rushing on 29 carries.

WO-S will entertain Beaumont Central next week while PN-G welcomes in Humble Summer Creek.
