Bears will try to tame angry Tigers

LITTLE CYPRESS — Both the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears and the Silsbee Tigers will look to bounce back this week after tough losses in their first games of the year Friday night at Battlin’ Bear Stadium.

The Bears (0-1) are coming off a 21-3 loss at the hands of West Orange-Stark in the Orange Bowl while the Tigers (0-1), preseason favorites to win District 21-3A, fell to Port Neches-Groves 45-21 on the road.

The Bears platyed pretty well defensively against the Mustangs, holding WO-S to 284 yards. However, the Bears struggled offensively, netting just 164 total yards.

Bear senior running back Jalen Griffin had a superb game in his first-ever varsity start, rushing for 87 yards on 17 carries.

Quarterback Caleb Harley was just 8-of-24 for 43 yards but had at least six passes dropped.

The Tigers, meanwhile, will look to shore up their defense after PN-G quarterback Ky Walker completed 26-of-31 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns. PN-G tailback Brent Halfin had a big night as well, rushing for 137 yards on 27 totes. Indian receiver Jeremiah Rose had 11 receptions for 130 yards and two scores.

Silsbee will try to get their potent offense going with 2012 21-3A Most Valuable Player quarterback Patrick Reed, who passed for 2,021 yards and 18 TDs and rushed for 1,087 yards and seven TDs last season along with running back Floyd Spearman and receivers Zayon Jackson and Chris Elam.

The Bears and Tigers fought to the very end last year in Silsbee with the Tigers escaping with a 40-37 home win.

LC-M outgained the Tigers 415-319 in that one with Harley passing for 164 yards and a TD while Alex Sezer rushed for 187 yards and two TDs.

Reed, meanwhile, threw for 257 yards and two TDs and ran for two more.

LC-M will have its bye week next week before hosting Coldspring Sept. 20 while the Tigers entertain Lumberton next week.
