After dominating Game One, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears couldn’t overcome the Dayton Lady Broncos and their hitter Presley Bell as Dayton downed the Lady Bears 11-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-23 in Class 4A Region III bidistrict playoff action at Panther Gym at Ozen High School.
The Lady Bears (25-16), District 20-4A runnerups, jumped all on the Lady Broncos (22-10) in Game One behind the hitting of Sarah Woods and Malayzia Winbush and they led by as much as 18-4 before closing it out.
However, the Lady Broncos, the third-place unit out of District 19-4A, never backed down and turned the hitting from Bell into a huge advantage.
Bell carried her team at the net as she easily compiled a match-high 22 kills.
The Lady Broncos scored five straight points to go up 17-10 in Game Two and eventually took it.
Game Three was nip-and-tuck throughout. With it tied up at 20-20, Bell came up with three straight kills and Dayton was able to hang on.
The Lady Bears were down 17-14 in Game Four but behind the hitting of Winbush and Maddie Frey, they were able to snag a 21-19 edge.
Dayton, however, received two kills apiece from Bell and Ravin Wilson as the Lady Broncos tallied six of the match’s final eight points.
Woods led the Lady Bears with 11 kills. Frey notched 10 kills while Winbush had nine. Jade Piper contributed seven kills while Darby Strother had five.
Cassidy Webster paced the Lady Bears with 16 service points and an ace. Kelsey Crowe served up seven points while Piper and Josie West added five apiece.
West led the way with 23 assists with Piper contributing 11.
Dayja Arnold posted a team-high 25 digs with Crowe collecting 16 and Webster 14.
Wilson and Alexia Briggs had seven kills apiece for the Lady Broncos while Amber Green had six and Meg O’Neal added five.
Wilson collected 11 service points and an ace. Anna Etling had 10 points and an ace. Jordan Hall had seven points while O’Neal added six.
The Lady Broncos move on to face either Georgetown or Brenham in the area round later this week.
OF, BC fall
Both the Orangefield Lady Bobcats and Bridge City Lady Cardinals were swept out of the Class 3A bidistrict playoffs Tuesday night.
The Lady Bobcats fell to the Huffman Lady Falcons 25-20, 25-18, 25-11 while the Lady Cardinals lost in three straight games to 22-3A champion Tarkington.
Orangefield was the third-place representative out of 21-3A while Bridge City was the fourth-place squad.
21-3A champion Hamshire-Fannett is the last 21-3A team standing after the Lady Longhorns downed Splendora in four games.
Liberty defeated Hardin-Jefferson 25-21, 19-25, 25-6, 25-20.
