TABC polls out, Mustangs ranked No. 13

ORANGE — With basketball season nearing on the horizon, there is no doubt that the District 21-3A boys race will be the most interesting heading into the campaign.

That was never more evident this week with the realse of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Preseason state polls.

With a slew of starters and bench players back from last season’s 22-11 mark, Coach Jason Wilkins’ West Orange-Stark Mustangs are ranked No. 13 in Class 3A, ahead of perennial poers Silsbee and Hardin-Jefferson.

The Mustangs went 10-2 in 21-3A play last season to finish second behind Silsbee. H-J was the third-place playoff team.

The defending 21-3A champion Tigers are ranked right behind the Mustangs at No. 14 while H-J chimes in at No. 17. Houston Yates is ranked No. 1 in 3A.

In Class 4A, Beaumont Central, who returns most of their starters, are ranked No. 3 and are the 20-4A favorites. Dallas Kimball is No. 1 in 4A.

In Class 2A, the Kountze Lions should be their dominant selves again and are ranked No. 1 again. District rival East Chambers is at No. 11. Plano West is No. 1 in Class 5A.

On the girls’ side, Duncanville is ranked No. 1 in 5A. San Antonio Brennan tops the 4A list. Celina is No. 1 in 3A and Brock tops the 2A chart.

The Buna Lady Cougars are No. 21 in 3A while Splendora sits at No. 25.
