Over at the YMBL Boys Tournament Thursday, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs pulled out a 45-44 victory over Beaumont West Brook while the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears fell to Galena Park North Shore 70-40.

The Mustangs were able to get past the Bruins by the play of standout seniors Laquarious Paige and Brandon Joubert.

Paige poured in a game-high 19 points and snagged six rebounds while Joubert added 11 points.

Michael Zeno and Rickey Guillory led the Bruins with 12 points apiece.

North Shore erupted on a 19-7 run in the first period to get past the Bears.

On Tuesday night the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears opened District 20-4A in fine fashion night by downing the Beaumont Central Lady Jaguars 47-39 at The Bear Cave Tuesday night.

The Lady Bears (8-7, 1-0) jumped out to a 13-8 lead after the first period and led 22-18 at intermission.

The Lady Jaguars, however, stormed back to take a 35-32 edge going into the fourth and that’s when the Lady Bears turned it on.

LC-M went on to a commanding 15-4 run in the final eight minutes to ice the game away.

Junior post Tori Thompson shredded the Central defense with a double-double as she tallied 17 points and yanked down 10 rebounds.

Guard Cassidy Webster pumped out nine points and she added seven steals and four assists. Josie Nimitz filtered in eight points and had four steals. Grace Chen contributed six points while Malayzia Winbush added five.

The LC-M defense was stingy, forcing Central into 21 turnovers and the Lady Bears shot a solid 10-of-13 from the free-throw line.
