HOOP ROUNDUP: Balanced Lady Cards slip past WO-S

WEST ORANGE — Two teams that have been near the bottom of the District 21-3A barrel for the last few seasons have proved early on in non-district play that they could well mean business this season and on Tuesday night at Mustang Gym, the two had a superb battle to open up 21-3A play.

The Bridge City Lady Cardinals got hot enough late in the second half to pull away for a 59-49 victory over the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs.

Bridge City (10-2, 1-0) led almost the entire way but couldn’t pull away from the pesky Lady Mustangs (7-6, 0-1) until the fourth quarter.

Lady Cardinal guard Bailee Bacon had a steal and a layup to close the third period to give BC a 42-36 edge.

At the start of the fourth period, the Lady Cardinals went on a 14-5 run to grab a 56-41 cushion with a little more than two minutes remaining.

BC forced the Lady Mustangs into 12 of their 35 turnovers in the decisive fourth.

The Lady Cardinals led 10-7 at the end of the first period and led by as much as 24-11 but WO-S closed the half with a 10-0 spurt to get to within 24-21 at intermission.

Once again, like they’ve done most of the season, the Lady Cardinals showed balance across the floor to notch another victory.

Forward Alexus Henry led the way with 16 points. Post Kelsey Fults bruised her way to a double-double, notching 12 points while hauling down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Bacon finished with 10 points while Shayla Bratton had seven and Caylin Choate six. Forward Kasey Frederick added five points and six boards.

The BC win offset an excellent performance from Lady Mustang strong forward Eriel Jordan. Jordan, who averaged nearly 17 points a game entering the contest, led the WO-S arsenal with 22 points and eight rebounds. She kept the Lady Mustangs in the fight by scoring 14 of her points in the middle two periods.

Post Nakaiya Platt contributed seven points and eight rebounds. Guards Derriasha Daugherty and Breanna Preston scored seven points apiece while Lauren Samuel hauled down seven boards.

The Lady Mustangs finished with a 35-27 rebounding edge. The two teams combined for 65 turnovers as BC also committed 30 of their own.

Free-throw shooting was a sore spot for both squads.

BC finished just 13-of-31 from the charity stripe while the Lady Mustangs were a woeful 4-of-14..

Both teams will dive into tournament action this Thursday through Saturday.

The Lady Cardinals will venture to the Nederland Tournament while WO-S heads to the Deweyville Tournament.
