Pirates will greet talented 5A Wolverines

VIDOR — Can anyone slow down Vidor’s running game featuring running back Sage Smith?

The Clear Brook Wolverines are going to give it their best shot when they make their way into Pirate Stadium Friday night.

Smith and the Pirate offensive line have terrorized opposing defenses through two games. Smith has amassed an amazing 426 yards and eight touchdowns to help Vidor got to 2-0 on the young season in wins over Santa Fe (28-19) and Bridge City (54-13).

Tailback Jeremy Stephenson has over 150 yards on the season after going for 83 yards and two TDs on six carries against Bridge City.

Defensive back Alex Boutte, an All-District 20-4A selection last season, had two interceptions against the Cardinals.

No doubt, the Pirates will face a formidable Class 5A opponent in the Wolverines (1-1).

The Pirates defeated Clear Brook 33-14 last season behind a 443-yard rushing attack while limiting the Wolverines to 226 total yards. Montana Quirante rushed for 146 yards and three TDs and passed for 99 more in the victory.

Both teams made the playoffs as the Pirates went 9-2 while the Wolverines went 6-6.

Clear Brook defeated La Porte 25-21 in its opener and fell to Katy Seven Lakes 13-0 last week.

The Wolverines returned 10 starters off the playoff unit, including six on offense.

Clear Brook is paced offensively by tailback Derek Simmons, who had 1,160 yards and 13 TDs last season. Clear Brook has a nice offensive line with guys like Ian Helaire and Desmond Gary leading the way.

The Wolverines have an excellent kicker in Yannis Routsas, who booted 10 field goals and made all 42 of his extra-point attempts in 2012.

The Pirates will look to get all of their “ducks in a row” in this final non-district game. They have their bye week next week before going on the road to face Nederland Sept. 27.
