Pirates sail past Indians, 28-19

SANTA FE, Texas — The Pirates picked up right where they left off in 2012 and used a strong running game to cruise to victory on opening night.

The Vidor Pirates, behind the strong legs of running back Sage Smith, powered past the Santa Fe Indians for a 28-19 victory to open the 2013 high school football season.

Santa Fe struck first, but the Pirates responded quickly as Smith bolted 49 yards for his first touchdown of the night to even the score at 7-7.

The Pirates defense seized the opportunity and forced a fumble deep in the Indians territory, and Smith rumbled in from two-yards out to give Vidor the lead right before half-time.

The Pirates came out firing on all cylinders in the second-half as Smith struck again, this time from 73 yards, to put Vidor up 21-7.

The Indians responded with a scoring drive and narrowed the Pirates lead to 21-13 after a missed extra point attempt.

Santa Fe then attempted an onside kick, but the ball was recovered by Marcus Moore. On the next play Smith, who finished with 251 yards rushing, bolted through the defense for his fourth touchdown of the night and a 28-13 lead.

Santa Fe added another score with 21 seconds left in the game, but it was the Pirates who came away victorious.

Vidor (1-0) will play under the new lights of Ivan Croak Field at Pirates Stadium next week by hosting the Bridge City Cardinals (0-1), who opened the season at home with 44-20 loss to the No. 1 state ranked Newton Eagles.
