OF spoils Anderson's performance with 1-0 win over Stangs

ORANGEFIELD —

Orangefield Baseball Coach Todd Trawhon knows his team was lucky to get out of Friday's game against West Orange-Stark with a victory.

Aidan Anderson was brilliant against the Bobcats and the top of the seventh was not looking too promising for Orangefield to keep the lead.

Orangefield in the end escaped a bases loaded, no-out jam to win 1-0 against WO-S.

Anderson threw all six innings against the Bobcats and only gave up three hits and struck out 13 batters.

Braxton Smith started for the Bobcats and threw six innings before starting the top of the seventh off with a walk and two hit batters with no outs. Ryan Gunstream came into the game at that point and quickly picked up two strike outs.

Gunstream then got a chopper right back to the mound to end the game.

“When a guy comes in like that you try not to panic,” Trawhon said. “You try to stay calm because if you aren't calm the pitcher will pick up on it.”

Cody Angelle scored the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch. Angelle led the inning off with an infield single and moved around the bases on an error and a walk by Tryce Howard.

There were not too many other times Anderson got into serious trouble against Orangefield batters.

“Their pitcher did awesome tonight,” Trawhon said. “Anderson is maturing and turning into a young man. He is only going to get better and that is pretty scary considering he is only a sophomore. My hat is off to him.”

Smith struck out seven batters and gave up four hits and two walks for Orangefield before exiting the game.

Orangefield put runners on second and third in the first and fourth innings only to have Anderson strike out the next two batters he faced.

The Bobcats did it again in the second before Anderson struck out Eric Truncale to end the threat.

Bridge City defeated Hamshire-Fannett 11-1 in other District 21-3A action. Hunter Uzzle, Chase Shugart and Preston Pittman each hit home runs for the Cardinals.
