Lady Bears sink Crosby in Game One

PORT ARTHUR — Little Cypress-Mauriceville third baseman Blythe Ferguson roped a two-run double in the top of the sixth inning and shortstop Haley Mills blasted a three-run home run in the seventh to help propel the Lady Bears to a 6-0 Class 4A bidistrict playoff victory over the Crosby Lady Cougars in Game One of their best-of-three series.

It was a tremendous pitching duel between LC-M senior Hope Russell and Dayton’s Abby Walker for five innings until the Lady Bears (25-6), District 20-4A runnerups, broke through in the sixth frame against the Lady Cougars (19-9), the third-place unit out of 19-4A.

Russell was masterful for the Lady Bears as she allowed a mere two hits while striking out four and walking two.

Walker allowed just five hits.

Mills scored two runs as she and Mikaela Stegall reached in the sixth and scored off Ferguson’s double off the leftfield wall.

In the seventh, Kayla Manuel drew a walk and Danyelle Hodges reached on a pinch hit single to set up Mills’ three-run blast. LC-M added its sixth run when Taylor Fraccastoro, who had doubled earlier in the game, walked and scored after the Lady Cougars made a throwing error on a Russell bunt.

Game Two of the series will be at 7 p.m. tonight at PA Memorial. Game Three, if necessary, will be back at PA Memorial Monday at 7 p.m.

The winner of the LC-M-Crosby series will face either Elgin or Waller in the area round next week.

It wasn’t so great of a night for the rest of District 20-4A.

The 20-4A champion Vidor Lady Pirates (25-6) were stunned by Kingwood Park, the fourth-place unit out of 19-4A, 4-3 in a one-game series.

Kingwood Park will advance to face either Hutto or Magnolia in the area round next week.

The Lumberton Lady Raiders, the fourth-place team out of 20-4A, fell in their one-game series to state-ranked No. 1 and 19-4A champion Barbers Hill 13-0 at Ford Park.

Meanwhile, the Nederland Lady Bulldogs, the third-place 20-4A unit, fell to the Dayton Lady Broncos, the second-place team out of 19-4A, 6-4 in Game One of their best-of-three series Friday night in Dayton.

Game Two will be today at 1 p.m. at Nederland High School with Game Three, if necessary, will follow 30 minutes after Game Two.
